Born and raised in rural Maine, I’ve always loved reading and writing. I remember checking out as many books as I could carry from our wonderful local library. I used to wish I had a longer neck, so that I could balance more books under my chin. At Colby College, I focused on writing, literature, and art, graduating in 2004 with my BA in Word & Image Studies. The student-led press and publishing program at Portland State University drew me to Portland in 2006. While earning my MS in Writing with a Concentration in Publishing, I worked with PSU’s Ooligan Press to learn about every aspect of publishing.
I gained additional editorial experience working for the PSU English Department, teaching English courses and tutoring writers in the PSU Writing Center. While studying, I began working as a freelance book designer, with local, national, and regional clients. After graduating from PSU in 2008, I joined the Development and Communications Department at a private high school in Portland, where I wrote, edited, designed, and proofed materials for five years. I’ve also had a wonderful time critiquing manuscripts for a colleague whose YA novel debuted from Delacorte in October 2014.
When I’m not lost in a good book or a new manuscript, you can find me baking something with chocolate in the kitchen, growing brightly-colored flowers in the back yard, or chasing (and being chased by) our bald Pomeranian. I’m a big fan of American and Japanese cartoons. And I love crossword puzzles and Scrabble just as much as you might expect.
